Leadership, Virtual Teaming, Bio Teaming & Open Source
It’s obvious to me that things are changing. It is
probably silly to suggest otherwise. However, the rate
of change is what is different. Change is beginning to
occur so rapidly that it is impossible to even
conceptualize keeping up with the change at the current
rate.
What does this mean for leadership?
Ok, as I’ve thought about this for several years, I’ve
come to a conclusion. This conclusion has not been an
easy one to come to because it flies in the face of my
major striving in life, independence. Therefore, this is
no easy task. I have unconsciously and consciously
fought this revelation more than any other. Finally it
has dawned on me, over the period of the last three
years (I’m a bit slow<G>) that the only way to lead is
from the bottom.
Now, don’t get me wrong here, you still must lead from
the top.
I thought you just said, you have to lead from the
bottom?
Yes, I did.
Well, which is it?
It is both and that’s the conundrum.
Ok, so here we are at the topic for today: virtual
teaming, bio-teaming, and open source.
Here’s the 3 essential ideas you have to understand
about leadership and open source:
1. 'Tit for Tat',
2. 'Stop Controlling' and
3. 'Cluster'
Here are the 5 essential ideas you have to understand
about virtual teaming:
The ideal solution framework suggests making a
systematic pragmatical reference to five key
interdependent components of a successful virtual
business team - each of which must be set-up correctly
and then kept in constant equilibrium as the team
evolves and produces results. These are from:
Bioteaming:A Manifesto For Networked Business Teams:
http://www.bioteams.com/2005/04/06/bioteaminga_manifesto_for.html
1. Shared Team Understanding
2. New Processes and Practices
3. Ongoing Team Coaching
4. Holistic approach to Team Support Technology
5. True understanding of the dynamic nature of networked
business teams
Here are the key factors in bio teaming from the source
above on virtual teaming:
1. ORGANIC BOUNDARIES ('POROUS MEMBRANES').
2. SELF-ORGANISATION
3. MEMBER AUTONOMY
4. COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM
5. ACTION BIAS
6. 3 COMMUNICATION LEVELS: 'Member (M) to M', 'M to
Environment' and 'M to Host Community”
7. EXTERNAL TEAM PROCESSES
8. INTERNAL TEAM PROCESSES
9. NETWORKED RELATIONSHIP STRUCTURE
10. LIVE EXPERIMENTATION
11. MAJOR CHANGES EMERGE UNPREDICTABLY
12. DEVELOPMENT CYCLE: Birth, Expansion and Replication.
Now, how I can possibly stuff all these together into a
simple set of concepts?
Fitness
Inclusion
Power
Accountability
Authority
Responsibility
Adaptability
Synergy
These critical success factors will occur in differing
amounts and with particular attributes for each team, or
open source environment.
Oh yes, we can add a lot of other modifiers, but
essential this eight-bit model, once it’s spiraled and
recursed onto itself through 8 bits each, creates a
simple 64K mapping solution I’ve outlined this system in
my new book coming in January 2006: CPR for the SOUL:
Creating Personal Resilience By Design.
