The 5 Meta Competencies of Integral Leadership

For the past 17 years I've been studying leadership
from every angle. I was inspired to do so to try to
understand why I seemed to end up in leadership
positions. Come to find out, the reasons weren't all
that close to what I thought they were, but along the
way, I discovered these 5 Meta Competencies of Integral
Leadership. A few years ago, after reading Schon, I
realized that Leadership is inseparable in terms of the
intersubjective nature of itself--a big word for
everything depends on everything else.

I came up with pretty much a working model that I had
used for about 7 years in actual practice because what
was out there wasn't working in practice and not with
people who were just folks. Much of the work I was
doing was in hospitality and the people who work in
hospitality experience 200% turnover on average among
employees and about 33% turnover in management. There
are a lot of reasons for this, but the idea is that if
your leadership model isn't practical, then it will
bury you as I soon found out. So many models are great
for very sophisticated managers and leaders, but when
you get down into the roots of an organization, you
have to be practical. You might say that is where I
really developed the Strategy Focused Developmental
Coaching System. Back then, I did mostly performance
coaching and if it wasn't consulting, then I don't know
what it was. After a time, I realized that people just
didn't do well with advice and I had to create some
real practical methods for helping them move forward.
Those were the days, you might say.

Out of all of that came GENERATI.

At first, I thought Generati was a competency. Later I
realized it was an end result and not a competence per
se. Over time I continued to look for what it was that
would answer this question inspired by Clare W. Graves,
"How will Whom Lead Who to do What, When, Where Why."

In my experience, there are five things that can't be
distilled away:

ATTENTION
INTENTION
ALIGNMENT
CAPABILITY
COACHING

These five intersubjective elements create GENERATI, or
what I refer to as the third win in win-win-win.

Almost all of these Meta Competencies (meta means
'about') are completely fleshed out at this time and
are being taught in a variety of programs at Leadership
University. More than 17 years of work, study, blood,
sweat and certainly tears have gone into streamlining
the system as Integral Leadership. More than 200 models
(and growing) like ornaments on the Integral Leadership
Tree, which someday will be in one place for people to
review and search and more than 1,000,000 words
describing the reality of what's it like to become an
integral leader.

The question is...is it practical, will it work?

The answer? It does for thousands of people and
companies around the world and you haven't seen
anything yet. Over the next few years, more and more
leaders will come to know the simplicity of these 5
Meta Competencies of Integral Leadership and I will
make the full circle I discussed early in the 90s about
