power."

I was struck by the above quote today because I believe
I understand what the author meant and it's such great
advice. But that's not why it struck me. What struck me
about the quote is that you literally CAN change the
past.

CHANGE THE PAST BY CHANGING THE FUTURE!

Let me see if I can explain.

For most people, the future is an extension of the
past.

For example: if I come into the world with certain
gifts, those gifts for the most part dictate my life
and who I become unconsciously. This is not necessarily
negative. In some ways, it is entirely natural and
that's the point.

You see, most of us are merely "reflections" of our
past, whether that past is our heredity, our
experience, our learned ability, etc. We are not in the
moment, we are NOT in awareness and choice.

Our pasts are living us.

For most leaders, this is not something people want to
hear because it's not natural to think or feel about
the quote above in the way it struck me. Yet, in
writing to you, perhaps I can show you some ideas that
embedded in "my" meaning about the quote that might be
helpful.

Each moment of time NOW gives us the opportunity to
examine the past in light of the future. Or if you like
it the other way around: to examine the future in light
of the past. This provides leaders with VERY powerful
tools with which to consider their leadership
decisions.

If a leader--who is able to conceptualize how the past
equals the future--examines the NOW with objectivity
about the past instead of being subjective or embedded
in it...I believe the solution they reach will have
higher  quality = efficiency and effectiveness, than a
decision without this consideration.

Try it yourself using these guidelines.

The next time you have an important decision to make,
ask yourself these questions before deciding an action:

1. What is it about the past that is revealed in these
issues?

2. What would be my natural inclination here?

3. How would the future be if I made this decision--as
a reflection of the past?

4. Is there an opportunity now to disconnect the future
from the past; or leverage it?

5. Am I able to see how the past has presented me with
this issue?

Now, I can't promise you'll change your mind, but the
exercise may be helpful, especially if you can gather
some other ideas and issues to reflect on using your
mastermind.

What, don't have a mastermind?
