A Message from the Founder

Learning Management Systems

Since the shifts we've seen regarding the Internet,
online learning and what some refer to as elearning,
the learning management system has become automated to
create the ability to measure learning progress, note
compliance and identify opportunities for continued
performance and development.

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a set of tools
that facilitate the delivery of the right content to
the right students, at the right time, in the right
format. An LMS typically provides, but is not limited
to:

-Registration and tracking of students
-Content creation and delivery capability
-Skill Assessment and development planning
-Organizational resource management

So, why do leaders need to concern themselves with LMS?

I think the biggest reason why leadership is concerned
with LMS is centered on the growth and development of
leaders. Any leader knows that in order to develop
future leaders one has to create TPOV: a teachable
point of view. This TPOV has to diffused through the
organization and appears as simply as how to manage
conflict or more complexly as a core organizational
competence.

In the same vein, there has to be some "accounting" for
and "responsibility" taken for those in the leadership
stable who are provided with opportunities to acquire
knowledge, practice leadership and gain access to
leadership opportunities.

In my view, one of the ways to accomplish a number of
these goals is to establish, along with a leadership
development system, a learning management component or
system. While leadership is difficult to pin down, the
attributes of leadership are certainly centered on
learning.

Here are some guidelines I've found to use when
considering LMS:

* Business IMPACTS of learning investments (e.g.
changes in sales revenue, changes in speed to market)
* Business MEASURES, rather than learning
accomplishment measures, more closely aligning training
results to business metrics.  This will require closer
integration of LMS systems to Business ERP systems
(e.g. Financials,
Sales and Internal Business Processes)
* Nature of those that are accessing learning (vs.
those who are not)
* Readiness Metrics:  Ways of measuring how READY the
organization is to change, merge, deploy or hire

While these are not all one has to consider in a LMS
design, I do think it makes a lot of leadership sense
to consider all of the factors stated above in terms of
what really matters to an organization that is
developing a learning management system for their
leadership development design.
