Leadership Bandwidth

Every now and then, I'm struck by the wisdom of our
leaders in business. While many take pot shots at
leaders, I think it's because they've never been on the
leadership hot seat. In this case, here's a person
who's not only on a hot seat, but inherited his
leadership position from someone who proved that he
could lead as well. While I don't always agree with
everything that goes on, these kinds of leaders have my

I really like the list as it covers the bandwidth
required for strategic leaders. While each of us as a
leader has our own style, the application of that
leadership through simple principles that are executed
flawlessly are key to leadership success.

When we coach leaders, we would do well to remind
ourselves to share with those people we coach, the
opportunity to understand the bandwidth leaders need to
function in a complex adaptive system.

One of the ways I've found to create leveraged
conversations with the leaders I work with is to
understand leadership bandwidth. Most of us can
function well in certain areas of leadership, but are
at a loss to fully traverse the range of leadership
required. I'm reminded of the six factors of climate:
responsibility, clarity, flexibility, rewards,
standards and commitment and how we need to often use a
"range" of leadership styles to lead effectively.

The next time you work with a leader, probe their
ability to use a wide range of styles in different
contexts, instead of just applying the tried and true.
Not only will you grow leadership in all directions,
the strategy and tactics of working across bandwidth in
leadership supports the challenge and opportunity
available to leaders whose personal, professional,
business and network development are essential for
individual and collective success.
