A Message from the Founder
Becoming an Inspirational Leader

Most of the time when I hear people talk about
motivational leadership, I wonder why people think
they can motivate people, other than through fear
or coercion.

One of the things I've come to believe over time,
both as a leader and as a follower, is that
leadership is about inspiration and perspiration
more so than about motivating people.

Often we get ourselves into leadership positions
because of our own needs to lead and less because
others have been inspired by us. I wrote an
article some time ago called "Leadership That

The moral of the story was that leadership in the
future will be selected by people who are willing
to pay for leadership with their time, energy AND
motivation. They will be following a leader out of
their own design (desires and needs).

This brings about a whole other idea of leadership
and that is the idea that leaders need be inspired
in order to inspire people who are motivated to
follow. In some respects, there's nothing new
about this as many will note that inspiration has
been around since the beginning of time. Yet, it
is becoming more relevant in a "high choice"
environment where people vote with their time,
energy, attention and money as to who leads.

The other key element is that people are becoming
more "conscious" as a whole. In most cases it is
because we have more choices and fewer
requirements because of an improving standard of
living that we do this or that, but rather, what
do we "want" to do. I feel this is why we haven't
seen any real increase in happiness over the past
50 years.

As this shift becomes more apparent over time with
increased numbers of choices, leadership will have
no choice, if it's to continue to be attractable
to people, it must be inspired and therefore more

Modern day times with all the challenges present
are more difficult and people "want to be
inspired" and not led. In the past, leaders led
people. I often remember in the past hearing
people say that people want to be led.
This usually meant people need to be told what to
do in one fashion or another.  My sense is people
want to be inspired, not led...leading and
following emerge from inspiration.

Even with the emphasis on participative and
servant leadership, not much has changed and I
think I might have an answer as to why not.

To be inspirational as a leader, you have to be on
an inspired path. While some people are lucky and
have the path ingrained in them, most do not.
Achieving a design which is consistent with who we
are as people and then aligning that path with
contribution is a much more challenging
In writing to a friend the other day, I listed a
few things I thought were important for any person
to consider. Now I realize it is difficult to be
inspirational if you aren't answering these
specific challenges in ways that are meaningful to

	-Identify an ideal.
	-Contrast the ideal against your core strivings
         or desires
	-Eliminate almost all but the very most important
         part of the ideal
	-Align the core ideal with the core strivings
	-Become crystal clear about the "path of
	-Evaluate all stimuli in relation to resources
	-Allow most stimuli to pass through
         unfiltered-let it go on by
	-Detach from outcomes because action is on the
         path; what happens
	-Re-invigorate the core on a regular consistent
         basis WITH awareness
	-Celebrate the path

While this seems complex at first glance, in all
actuality it is fairly simple to do with
self-knowledge and a desire to inspire yourself,
which then becomes inspirational to others.

The key in my view about leadership for the future
is that leaders will focus on what inspires them,
as will followers. Once you're inspired, others
will follow. It goes without saying, at least to
me anyway, that in an age of individualism, as
some say we've entered, that focusing on what
inspires us may seem selfish to some.

Yet, how can we be inspirational without being

individual’s Reiss Profile, you know what will and
what will not motivate the person, the
individual’s personality strengths and weaknesses,
the careers the person will find fulfilling, and
what is required for value-based happiness.  If
you know the Reiss Profile of any two people –
partners, supervisor and employee, parent and
child – you can identify specific strengths and
weaknesses in the relationship.  Of 50 people
tested on both the Reiss Profile and Myers Briggs,
more than 90 percent liked seeing both results and
said the findings were compatible. The Reiss
Profile is backed by more than 25 peer-reviewed
scientific publications and is regarded by many

Steven Reiss is Professor of Psychology &
Psychiatry at the Ohio State University.  A
graduate of Dartmouth College and a Yale
University Ph.D., Dr. Reiss has won three national
