A Message from the Founder
=============================

ADHOCABILITY

This is a case that "what's in a name" says it
all.

Adhocability: The capability shown by leadership
to reach out in real time to create adaptive
responses under uncertain conditions to produce
resilience.

One of the critical competencies of 21st Century
Leadership is adhocability. Many people have talked 
about ad hoc leadership for some time. It is nothing 
new, yet it has become important. Lately, we've been 
reading about "swarms" and "networks." These two 
organizing forces are now key for leaders.

Swarming is the phenomena shown by our friends the
ants as they become sentient through emergence.
Their ability to direct resources to the "point of
condition," is literally out of this world. They
show that simple agents, using simple rules can
respond to tensions and conditionals in the
environment.

In my view, being able to direct resources through
swarming, or "live" networking in real time may be
a lot more important than just in the military.
Since most organizations are becoming leaner and
leaner, we need to learn from the ants -- while
specialized, they can "drop their mops" and run to
help when the alarm goes off. Not unlike the lowly
ants--organizations of relatively simple
agents--modern day organizations must become
"sentient" as well.

The degree to which a leader can demonstrate
adhocability will increase the flexibility of the
organization to handle unforeseen consequences,
unintended effects and what I've referred to as a
"point of condition."  A point of condition (POC)
is part of the language of adhocability. A POC is
a tension that is produced by a specific set of
conditions that arise when organizational momentum
is at a point of inflection. Failing to find ways
to address the POC appropriately can prevent the
leader from getting the organization mobilized
during a "window of opportunity" or even more
importantly, a moment of leverage.

People used to call these moments of truth, but
they are no longer "just" moments of truth, they
are moments of leverage...that are best addressed
as adhocability as the great playwright William
Shakespeare stated:

   "There comes in the affairs of men and women, a
tide, which taken at the flood leads on to
fortune. Omitted, all their days are spent in
hardships and miseries. On such a sea we are now
afloat. We must take the sea as it serves or lose
our ventures." Julius Caesar by William
Shakespeare

My guess is that Will invented adhocability with
that phrase, for surely it begs the question of
leadership in uncertain times.
