A Message from the Founder
=============================

Practice, Learn, and Serve

Something I've been advocating for leaders is
encapsulated around the three interrelated
concepts I call "practice, learn and serve."
Here's what I think it means for leaders.

Albert Bandura formulated the social learning
theory that stated people learn essentially
vicariously from a triad of elements. The triad
shows the interaction between the person, their
behavior and their environment. I believe people
are concerned with the "practices" of leaders.
Therefore, if we indeed learn vicariously, our
leadership practice is what stands out for most
people. In other words, they watch our walk, and
discount our talk.

PRACTICE

What leadership practice do you have?

When I ask myself this question, I realize that
"my" practices may be one of the most essential
leadership attributes I have. It also keeps me
honest. While I may be able to "fool" myself, I
can't fool others with my practices. Interestingly
enough, our own leadership illusion often isolates
us from really identifying what practice others
perceive.

LEARN

In this particular component, I believe that as
leaders we have to constantly be engaged in
learning. This learning needs to occur at a
variety of levels: personally, professionally,
business and network leadership all are important
areas in which to learn. Furthermore, internal,
external, financial and developmental learning are
also important. It's almost as if we have to
"cross-train" in order to learn at a rate
consistent with our leadership practice and our
leadership service.

I admit this is not easy to do. Yet, I believe we
have no choice but to increase our learning
dramatically. Arie De Geus, has said: "The ability
to learn faster than your competitors may be the
only sustainable competitive advantage." I believe
learning is the lynch pin between practice and
service.

SERVICE

This may be the most difficult because by the time
most leaders get to the point where they have the
reins, they are not interested in service. Yet,
that is precisely when service needs are the
highest. What also is becoming clear to me is that
when people try to do it on their own, things
really begin to get sub-optimized in leadership.
Yet, constantly we see leaders who are trying to
push, rather than invite. We see leaders who would
rather fight than switch to paraphrase an old
cigarette commercial.

In my own view, this is the most difficult area of
leadership. It seems just when our ego journey has
reached its point of reward, we must let go of the
ego at that very moment and offer ourselves up in
service.

As you contemplate your own leadership journey,
ask yourself these questions:

What leadership practices must I reinforce as
others view me in action?

What learning is important and critical for
leadership?

What service can I provide in order to leverage
our leadership vision?

If you're serious about leading, then practice,
learn and serve.
