A Message from the Founder
=============================

Conditional Leadership

The morality of an organization or state is
directly correlated to the degree that people take
personal responsibility for their behavior.

I'm often struck by how people blame
"corporations" or organizations for being
irresponsible, neurotic or narcissistic, to name a
few of the current pathologies circulating in
leadership literature. It's corporate this, or
corporate that, but little reflection on the real
place where responsibility lies and that is in the
stakeholders, including leadership.

When I discuss the term conditional leadership,
what I'm saying is that leadership is conditional
on the results of responsibility taken by the
leader and their constituents--they all bear the
burden of responsibility.

When we talk about corporate this, or business
that, we are merely allowing those with
responsibility to pass the onus of the actions of
leadership off of THEM!

Yes, that's right, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE, or not.

When it comes right down to it, I've realized that
leadership can't be deferred. Leadership is the
responsibility of every breathing soul on the
planet and when and if the planet's ecology wipes
out species, look in the mirror, you ARE PART OF
THE PROBLEM, as well as part of the solution, if
you so choose.

Leadership is conditional, or at least the
efficacy of leadership, on the responsibility
taken by the people. In that same vein, we all
have qualifications to meet in terms of being
responsible.

Currently in the USA, we see the polarization of
leadership, the polarization of responsibility.
There is no oneness in our leadership, only "whose
side you are on". Over time, we have outgrown our
representative form of government because we have
allowed people off the hook, when it comes to
taking personal responsibility for the actions of
leadership. There is no need to qualify your own
leadership; there is only the need to be a
citizen.

Just like in organizations that have blatantly
failed. It was the leaders' fault. Was it? Not so
fast grasshoppers! It was the people who belonged
to, invested in and led Enron who we owe
indictment to and that encompasses all those poor
souls whose investments in the company were lost
in the process--they bore responsibility for their
lack of responsibility.

In terms of the conditions of leadership, they are
broad and serious.

For eons we have allowed people to believe that it
was the leader's responsibility for the ill or
good of the organization. Not any more. The
morality of the world has reached a point where if
each individual doesn't take responsibility and
qualify the conditions for leadership, we'll be
wiped off the face of the earth in no uncertain
terms.

It's time to stop fooling around with leadership
and start taking responsibility.

My suggestion, qualify people on a regular basis
for leadership and qualify people on a regular
basis for monitoring the leadership they choose.
Because we defer responsibility to others for our
leadership, the only people responsible for
leadership are those people who are in deference!
