A Message from the Founder
=============================

Meta-Purpose in Leadership

One of the most interesting topics in my world of
leadership is "purpose". It is really hitting the
airways in so many different ways as people are
confronted with so many choices, that soon a
singularity of change — change occurring so
rapidly that everything is in constant flux --
will create the requirements for purposeful
leadership at every level, including the personal,
professional, business and network domains.

Enter Meta-Purpose.

A lot of people just get stymied when it comes to
purpose and rightfully so.
How can one choose only one purpose in life? How
is it that one would even design a single purpose
to manage all of the choices and awareness that
one accumulates through the experience of
leadership?

Take me for instance.

When I was younger, my purpose was to play. I mean
that literally and figuratively. I played
everything. I played all the time and I played
with energy and purpose. One could say my purpose
was in playing around everything, including school
where I spent more time in the hall than in the
class. I had a permanent desk outside the hall one
particular year that I remember.

In junior high (we didn't have middle school), I
played anything I could, including all sports,
summer, winter, fall, spring, even played around
in class, at home, all I remember clearly are two
things, playing and getting into trouble for
playing around at the wrong time.

In high school, the same thing. Playing around,
all sports, even worked in a thespian adventure
'playing' a drunk, when I had abstained from
alcohol throughout my athletic career.

In college, same issue, I played football and
baseball and scored a lot of points in intramural
basketball, again playing around in class, as
well. People would say Mike's purpose is playing.

Yet, that's not my purpose at all.

I believe what I was doing was learning. And the
easiest way to learn actively (my preferred
learning style) was to play. As I've grown older,
I still play, not as much physically, but more so
mentally, as you might have noticed. Yet, you
might also notice that I'm still learning. So
while I was young, I played to learn. As I've
grown into adult leadership, I've learned to play;
you might say that learning is my purpose.

Notice what I'm not telling you is that my purpose
was athletics, competition, succeeding in
business, making a living, having a family,
building a global business, articulating a model
of living...YET, each one of these was purposeful
and at any of those points in my life, I could
have said, "x" was my purpose. Well, if I had a
purpose guru working with me, they would still be
trying to help me find purpose, still working at
the level of action, instead of being able to look
across all these purposeful events, periods and
times in my life to help me discover that there is
a thread of me, who I am in all of these purposes.

A Meta-Purpose.

You see, I've been playing around enough with the
big boys to know that people like me and there a
lot of them--I call them dominant intuitives --
like flexibility, options and choices. Because
I've elevated failure into success by learning, I
call the failures--successful failures; largely
because they were all purposeful. Yet, I didn't
have a single purpose; I was being 'me'
purposefully-good or bad, right or wrong.
Unfortunately, most leaders never get to realize
who they are--really. The reason? The "purpose of
the day" club that beckons to them because someone
is in the business of purposing people.

In the last few years, I've realized that my
"type" will do much better in life by designing
around "Meta-Purpose." Meta-Purpose is the fabric
of purpose...literally and figuratively. When we
begin to see that we weave together our lives
based on purposes (plural), that together share a
particular affinity for our authentic nature, we
reach out "into" the realm of Meta-Purpose. Notice
there are no "purposes" gurus out there, only
purpose gurus.

I didn't grow up wanting to be a fireman, a
doctor, a plumber or a coach—I wanted to be all of
them. Some might say, I'm not clear; I need a
single purpose, a mission, or a 'whachamacallit'.
Yet, what I finally realized after being gurued to
death is that I had a purpose in my life all along
and it was the fabric of all of the purposes I had
in my life. I was the player, the competitor, the
achiever, the engager, the aggressor, the learner,
the maverick, the adventurer, the inventor, the
chef and still am...and therein lies the key, I am
all of those things. It doesn't matter what I do
with my life, all of those things will be a part
of any particular purposing I do as a leader, a
follower, or as a person dancing in an expression
of the divine wholeness.

The very second I got this concept a few years
ago, my life changed. I immediately began to
accept myself as not having a clear direction 'in
the moment', but many which were woven into a
fabric of expression and contribution. I also
settled down, stopped worrying and began to plan
more, yes plan more. I realized that I could
"design" my life better than it was living me. I
actually began to say yes to things that worked
for me and energized me. I stopped worrying as to
whether my present steps would take me off
purpose, but allowed my life to be both planned
and emergent within those plans. I made meta
plans. I made meta-plans across years and have
allowed the days and months to emerge. I create
large milestones, BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious
Goals) that appear absolutely unsolvable or
unthinkable, yet each is an attractor in the
meta-purpose of my life.

Now, I'm back to playing again. It's become hard
work at times and often is disappointing in the
short-term, but because I'm Meta-Purpose driven,
the small disappointments allow me to recalibrate
and re-engage resiliently. Over time, I've figured
how to monetize my meta-purpose which supports
some of my unthinkable ideas, my life and of
course, playing has renewed my spirit for even
bigger leadership goals.

My message to you is to not trap yourself and
others into a singular purpose, when meta-purpose
is really there for you to create the net you need
on the leadership hi-wire. I do think it is easier
to find your meta-purpose by using a strategy
focused developmental approach with a coach and
developmental team, but anyone can do it. It's
quite simple, although it does require some effort
and a guide.

I've written a book that is called CPR for the
Soul: Creating Personal
Resilience by Design. You can check it out here:
www.cprforthesoul.com. It's due out in print by
Thanksgiving and will be available digitally
around November 1. In this book, I've created the
formula to use to identify your meta-purpose as
well as the resilience you need to sustain you in
the process. If you'd like to take the online
telecourse, which will be taught by me during
January & February in 2005, join me in
Teledevelop.com for the play.

Until then, best of luck and illigitmi non
carborundum!

Cheers,

Mike R. Jay, Founder
