A Message from the Founder

Putting the HOW in the WHO with Leadership

The how is in who. Look at what I discovered? Take
the components of how:
"h" "o" "w". Do you realize those same components
can be used to create "who"? The who is in how and
the how is in the WHO!

Ok, so word games aside, what am I trying to say
here?

Many of you may remember that I've made reference
to actionability and how in order to get things
done, leaders have to make them actionable for
people. Chris Argyris in Flawed Advice & The
Management Trap identified four criteria that make
leadership "advice" or "direction" actionable
which I've included.

Actionable Advice has these characteristics
(paraphrased from Flawed Advice and the Management
Trap, C. Argyris, 2000)

-Advice that specifies the sequence of behavior
required to produce the intended consequences

-Advice should be crafted in ways that make the
causality transparent

-Causality embedded in advice in use is testable
in normal situations

-Actionable knowledge must specify the values or
governing variables that underlie and govern the
advice

Over time, I've tried to help leaders understand
that not only are people different (WHO), but that
the way in which people lead doesn't always lead
to a teachable point of view (HOW), as I've noted
in previous columns.

If you're going to put the HOW in the WHO, you
have to state the HOW for the WHO.

While that may seem simple, I find it isn't easy.

Most of the leadership communication I see going
back and forth between leaders and followers lacks
very important parts of the HOW. When it does have
the appropriate HOW, often it isn't made
actionable for the WHO that is being asked to
execute the HOW.
