Supporting Leaders

I'd like to take the time to share with you very
simple thoughts around supporting leaders. As a
leader myself, I find it difficult to get support
from followers. I suspect this is due to the
difficult times people have in navigating
uncertainty and the ambiguity of turbulent times.

None the less, leaders need the support of
followers in order to accomplish the work of
leadership.

While it does become a choice of who one supports,
or what leadership is worthy of support, I find
many people today are pulling back from supporting
real leaders. People, who on their own, step
forward and try to make a difference in the world
by giving up part of who they are to say or do
something out of the ordinary.

Whether this is a person you meet on the street
who stops to adjust the blanket of a homeless
person on a cold day, or someone who steps up and
says, let's work together to make a difference.

Much of the leadership today is what I call
utilitarian leadership.

Leaders who lead because they get something from
leading, whether they are CEOs paid to lead, or
whether someone agrees to step out into the public
eye because doing so is a veiled attempt at
networking. However, there are leaders who are
sacrificing great personal gain and an "easier"
life because they believe that someone has to
champion certain causes, or they are paying their
civic rent with no hint of asking for the "real"
return on their leadership investment. They lead
because someone has to....

In these days of myriad choices, whose leadership
are you supporting?

Are you one of those people who complain about
leadership, doesn't really become a leader, but
serves to voice your opinion about leadership
without really noticing how difficult it is to
actually try to lead something bigger than
yourself?

Changing the world is a difficult proposition for
leadership.

Often, just changing oneself and being the change
you seek is difficult enough, not alone when you
have to continually swim upstream, providing
leadership because if you don't who will?

As we move into and through uncertain times, I
encourage people not only to call leadership to
its best efforts, but to support people who lead
efforts that will provide support for change over
time.

Leadership is not easy; it's easy to condemn and
criticize leadership, it's a lot harder to support
leaders and lend a hand. My hope is that you will
find and support emerging leadership from wherever
it comes...believe me, it's not an easy thing to
face everyday when you're a leader with a cause
that is forcing people to change how they view the
world.

TEN THINGS YOU NEED TO CONSIDER BEFORE Starting Up
In Business
Lead By Ben Botes with Lynne Hunt
Monday, November 29, 2004
10:00 AM EST 1 hour

Starting and running your own business is an
exciting challenge and can be financially and
professionally rewarding. The most successful
businesses are those run by people who have taken
the time to plan their business, rationalize their
reasons for starting it and who have conducted
research and sought advice. There are very few
legal 'get rich quick' schemes and the success of
a business correlates directly to the efforts put
in by the small business owner. Time spent
planning and learning at pre-start up stage can
maximize your effectiveness once your business is
up and running.
