Day 11
SUBJECTIVITY

I want to be brief with these developmental models, as they are complex and take some time to learn and grok well enough to use in your own development of self-knowledge (SK) and self-awareness (SA).

Most people aren’t exposed to the language enough so the tools become something difficult to use in our adult development. Yet with time, all things are possible. smiley

Robert Kegan actually took most of William Perry’s model of relativism and repurposed (as we all do) into his own subject-object model.

This is helpful for us because what we are subject to, limits us in terms of having a relationship with that subject, or object.

Kegan notes that there are stages and levels of subject-object relationships that we can map ourselves and others into.

What’s more, each stage has its own “territory” so to speak, and specific developmental challenges.

I’m not going to identify those stages as they are easily searched online and you can read more about this model in a number of places.

The big takeaway is what has you — what and who are you subject to, and what and who do you have a relationship with and why?

Once we realize we are subject to our own lack of SK and are unaware of what has us… then and only then does SA kick in… as Stephen Covey noted in his work around habits, principles, and priorities.

Our lives are braided up and part of what has to happen is this process of unbraiding — sometimes very difficult Inquiry to get the feedback we need.

It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Ariel Durant.

“The present is the past rolled up for action, and the past is the present unrolled for understanding.”
