Development for Leaders
Series II
1-Minute Daily
Day 18
CONTEXT
You know context is more than likely one of the most important topics for today’s leader.
Context is remarkably changing and the acceleration of the rate of change is the most difficult thing for us to grok as a leader or follower.
The marginal returns of our leadership seem to be getting smaller and smaller as we enter what appears to be an abyss or singularity, as some might say.
Context may be the only solid ground we can provide as a leader and its most likely climbing higher and higher up on the leader’s priorities than at any point in time.
In search of context:
“Context is the background, environment, setting, framework, or surroundings of events or occurrences.
Simply, context means circumstances forming a background of an event, idea or statement, in such a way as to enable readers to understand the narrative or a literary piece.
It is necessary in writing to provide information, new concepts, and words to develop thoughts.
Whenever writers use a quote or a fact from some source, it becomes necessary to provide their readers with some information about the source, to give context to its use.
This piece of information is called context. Context illuminates the meaning and relevance of the text, and may be something cultural, historical, social, or political.”

In today’s VUCA environment, leaders have no choice but to set context. Yet the density and frequency required has shifted dramatically and as leaders we must reframe context continuously to create the story we need to be exploring with our followership.
