Development for Leaders
Series II
1-Minute Daily
Day 19
WORTHWHILE, SUSTAINABLE OUTCOMES
I’m one day away from your summary of this Series II, so why not close with something big?
So, here is some context and a story.
I had the honor of sitting next to Philip Crosby one evening at dinner with a client and while he didn’t say it there, what he has said, that to me, was so important about the quality movement he and Deming are known for was related to… helping people have lives.
Simplicity on the other side of complexity is worth everything, we are reminded by Holmes, and whatever we do in leadership, if the outcomes are not worthwhile, and sustainable; more than likely, we need to rethink things.
So much of what we learn in our SKSA Journey is critical to this notion that a lot of what we produce lacks a worthwhile, sustainable outcome… we are going through motions without really testing the assumptions behind those actions!
Yes, we explain what we do as part of a bigger equation and somehow that’s enough for most leaders.
And while it’s paralyzing at time’s to analyze and overthink things, I’m guessing truly worthwhile and sustainable outcomes are pretty much missing in a lot of actionable advice we are known for giving.
Worthwhile, as defined in ways that are generally accepted and sustainable are probably relevant guideposts for leader behavior always.
