Self-Awareness too?


Back in the late 80s, Emotional Intelligence became the hot topic in development.

I certainly jumped on that band wagon myself in the 90s and it took me a decade to fall off. Now, I look for tracks from time to time just to see where it’s headed.

There was, for me, a great takeaway in the work that Hay McBer (Dr. David McClelland’s Company) did with the ECI, or Emotional Competence Inventory.

I’ve copied their slides from those years with their permission and I’ll show you here:

You can see that Self-Awareness gives you half a “chance” at self-management (50-50) and about a 38% “chance” at Social Awareness.

Without it, you are up a creek without a paddle, so to speak, and you know which one they call it!

There is a LOT more to self-awareness than people think, as it relates to personality dynamics, and that’s next.
