Stage Transition

There have been 4 kinds of proposals for stage transitions
1.  Categorical ones such as in Jaques
2.  Psychometric ones such as in Rash (Dawson)
3.  Performance steps (Commons & Ross, Ross & Commons, Commons & Richards)
4.  Suborder tasks (Commons, Commons-Miller, Miller)

There has been difficulty in choosing among them
Here is suggest that that all are simultaneous true because they are describing stage transition is different ways

1. is performance on tasks which are suborder tasks that come between task orders of hierarchical complexity.
2.  is a description of how performance on different order tasks are mixed statistically
This is available form a Rasch Analysis
3.  is a description of the dynamics of stage change and talks about how the lower order task actions are alternated faster and faster until they are smashed together
These steps are scorable in narratives
4.  is a description of the suborder tasks that go between tasks with different orders of hierarchical complexity
For example, leading up to the concrete order of coordinating multiplication with addition in distributivity there are a number of suborder tasks and even sub sub order tasks
First comes counting, then addition, and finally multiplication, all primary order tasks
This is seen from the task sequences in micro-genetic studies of Piagetians and can be confirmed using Rasch Analysis

All give more detail to development and should be used when one is looking at just what is happening over 2 or 3 stages, which is usually the case in HR and clinical interventions.  It should answer some of the concerns of Mike Jay and others.  I can give more details if you ask questions or make comments.
