If you understand where people are as VOLT [Vertical, Oblique, Lateral, Time] and then think about how you apply the criteria for good advice, you’re already doing systematic work… something which most people take for granted everyone can be, do, have, become, and contribute.

Piaget said most adults stop thinking around “formal” and systematic thinking is a level which coordinates, organizes, and integrates the algorithms people use in formal thought.

So, it’s no easy task, hearing where you are ― and likely to project your own stuff ― and where the person being helped is ― and likely to need those cues, supports, and scaffolding necessary for help at that level, but…!

Most of us get ourselves “in over our heads” and are wrestling with problems that are beyond our current capability to solve!

How do we “hear” and “here” all of that?

Listening is one thing, being heard is another. Since the developed world, as most of us know it, has taught us that we can do anything, our arrogance keeps us in over our heads because we don’t have training in stage theory per se, and what that means in the helping business… we are just solving problems… without thinking… without hearing what’s really going on.

Most of us can’t grok 2 + 2 = 5, but in development, it’s a common equation IMHO.

While it opens a can of worms, so to speak, it always helps us remain humble and searching for ways to dignify our help with others.

If you’re motivated to solve problems, then you want problems… if you’re in over your head, solving problems is a “mole game”… everyone you solve creates two or three more.

There are times when solving problems, even when you can, is not such a great idea… The question is… how do you hear that?

It begins with inquiry, into your self, as well as with others.
