The BIG IDEA behind UBER EARS is to help you remember that listening is not hearing, speaking figuratively.
If you are going to:
1. Recognize where a person is… so to speak.
2. Understand what’s next;
Remember, these are the two main criteria that you must have as “verifiable data” (evidence-based is the modern idea) in order to cue, support, and scaffold help, guidance or advice.
Revisiting Argyris, he established “4” tests for giving advice in his 2000 book, FLAWED ADVICE and the MANAGEMENT TRAP.
Those “4 tests” will be discussed later and for now let’s understand what I mean by cuing, support, and scaffolding.
To cue something ― like a record ― you place the stylus in the right place, at the right time, in the right way, or order, as it would be, for the right reasons, to get the right results… or what I termed as RightACTION(tm).
Most of us are too flip with RightACTION and thus use a tennis racket to swat a fly… to be sure we hit the spot.
As an ACTIVE EXPERIMENTING Learner, that’s what I did, or worse, projected my own meaning-making system onto the helping function.
It took time to realize, as Argyris explains, that most of us are only good at what we do and not much else.
In order for helping actions to be RightACTION, we need to be able to distinguish where people are and what’s next for them.
While this sounds simple, it’s taken me almost 30 years to realize what it’s not and how to begin to codify UBER EARS.
In four short and interesting sessions, I can introduce this concept at many levels from naive to expert and help you realize how to attune your helping functions so they resonate with the people you help ― and they get traction with your helping MITEAM. 😉
