If you give advice… cue, support, and scaffold, you need this information
Hi,
In my last micro-cast ― a short article providing information for anticipatory guidance ― I reviewed the idea of “testing advice” for actionability using Chris Argyris’ notion of “4 criteria.”
Here they are in brief:
Argyris indicated that Actionable Advice has these characteristics:
• Specified Behavior: that which is required to produce the intended
consequences or goals
• Transparent Causality: know exactly what causes us to get certain effects
• Testable Causality: must be possible in normal situations
• Actionable knowledge: specify the values or governing variables that underlie and govern the advice or design of the advice.
I can’t remember where I got this synopsis, but it came from a summary of his book which I mentioned earlier.
With that disclaimer, his four tests seem simple and straightforward, but OMG,
they are really tough to do for a variety of reasons, most of which help
explain why we are not running the 7 Habits daily.
This is why I started backing off listening to the conversation going on in my head and start to invest… rather than just “pay” attention.
With the brouhaha around mindfulness these days, I’ll demonstrate why most of us can’t hear because we are listening to the wrong stuff.
Specifically, this is why I began to shift my inquiry and have spent years on 1000s of “after action reviews” explaining what’s there to be heard if we can develop UBER EARS!
