Self-Awareness R US?
If you have been following the micro-casts, we are here. If you want to know where here is, there is an index of this group of thoughts here.
I mentioned some ideas about self-awareness and how in order to help others, we need to be aware of our own stuff, such that, we don’t just project our BS onto others in a flawed helping process.
Now, and largely, the benefits derived from being yourself and just being present to others is often the most profound journey and in spite of our projection, people get helped!
That’s good to know since most people who help you are not going to be engaged in any bit about becoming self-aware. But since we are on the topic, what helps us become more self-aware?
Why do I ask that, you might think?
Research shows that without self-awareness, social
awareness is limited, and more… without self-awareness,
our ability to self-manage is also nipped in the bud…
and since social awareness and self-management are keys to
“relationship management” according to a theory of
emotional intelligence, climbing onto the shoulders of
self-awareness seems a pretty good proposition to me.
Yet…
If self-awareness is something that’s wired-in, why does it matter?
And that’s a bigger question than I can answer in a micro-cast.
Suffice it to say, we will just assume self-awareness to be a good thing for now and attempt to get all we can.
Over a 30-year career in developing coaching, I’ve realized that to go after self-awareness is like trying to push a string!
But…
Self-knowledge has leverage!
I’ll discuss briefly in our next note, the way in which DYNAMIC INQUIRY promotes self-knowledge in us and through others.
