MBTI Step II
MBTI® Step II: Uncovering the Nuances of Personality and Preference
The MBTI Step II assessment is an advanced version of the widely known Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, one of the most popular personality instruments in the world.
With a proven record of reliability spanning more than 50 years, it offers a
foundation for understanding individual differences and applying that
understanding to the ways people think, communicate, and interact. Versatile and
dependable, the MBTI tool sets the stage for lifelong learning and development. While the original MBTI helps individuals identify their four-letter personality type (such as INFP or ESTJ), Step II takes this exploration deeper by breaking each of the four preference pairs into five underlying facets, creating a more refined and individualized picture of personality.
Based on the psychological type theory of Carl Jung, MBTI Step II retains the core structure of the classic MBTI—Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I), Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N), Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F), and Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P). However, within each dichotomy, Step II reveals the specific behaviors and expressions of preference through a total of 20 subscales. For example, within the E–I preference, a person may be externally expressive (a facet of Extraversion) yet still prefer private reflection (a facet of Introversion).
This additional layer of analysis makes MBTI Step II particularly valuable in contexts where the four-letter type alone doesn’t fully capture the complexity of the individual. It helps explain why two people with the same type might still approach decisions, learning, communication, or leadership differently.
The results from Step II allow users to see:
- Facet-level consistency: where their behavior aligns fully with their type.
- Midzone results: where they show flexibility or situational adaptability.
- Out-of-preference facets: where they express behaviors more typical of the opposite type.
Step II can also be transformational in interpersonal relationships, helping people identify subtle differences in how they and others make decisions, process information, and manage their time. For example, two team members may both be Thinkers (T), but one may make decisions analytically, while the other prioritizes competence and performance outcomes — distinctions visible only at the Step II level.
The MBTI Step II report is especially helpful for personal growth and development planning. By highlighting not just preferences but patterns and potential blind spots, it allows individuals to make targeted changes — whether in building resilience, improving emotional intelligence, or adapting their style for better collaboration.
Importantly, the Step II approach reflects a more dynamic view of personality. It acknowledges that while core preferences may remain relatively stable, expression of those preferences can evolve, especially with experience, context, and intentional development.
In summary, MBTI Step II is a precision tool for deepening self-understanding. It moves beyond labels to illuminate the fine-grained structure of how personality operates, providing a roadmap for growth, connection, and improved performance across all areas of life and work.
